One of my favorite Owls, the Snow Owl. This one is a Female Snowy Owl, I think.

I used this Photograph as a referance: [link] It has the most amazing blue eyes. Although their Eyes are always Yellow from what i have seen, so I think that image has been edited.

first off ...I love the eyes...they definitely have depth and a realistic look, the highlights in them are GREAT. I think the edges of the owl could benefit with a more nuanced gradation. You do this on the upper left side of the owls head and it works really well. I like the fact that close up there is more detail to be seen and it becomes fuzzy as you go backward but I'm not sure the transition is a flawless one. all in all I love the subject and think the drawing kicks ASS....but everything can be made better with refinement. keep up the good work!!!!

i would believe it was a picture.......if my stupid eye hadn't seen that the left-side eye pupil seemed to be "sharper" than the other.

This is really touching, do you know why? Because when I was younger about 8 years ago I use to say the same thing as you are saying now and they kept saying: "Just practice, draw from life, learn from it." and I use to get annoyed and say I would never get THAT good. But in the end I gave it a shot and now I got where I wanted to be.

The moral of that story: You can do the same, just watch life and learn from it, draw whenever you can, learn the physics behind how light works, how the light hits the feathers and so on.

Good luck! =D

Very lovely piece. If I may be so bold as to offer a small critique? From your gallery the smaller photo of the drawing is what caught my attention, you obviously have talent and technique. Your dimensions seem almost perfect. Yet I feel like your depth or texture could use some work. I say this because I feel you're on the edge of really nailing it and have the ability if you focus your talents just a little more. For example I love your use of charcoal on the pupils, as it gives added depth and intensity to the eyes, and the hard black not only is strong on a white owl but it matches the very black coloring of realistic pupils. With some of the feathers I feel some of that realism is lost. Around the right eye you seemed to be working more on specific details, but much of the face is simply lines and all pretty much the same shade, the same tone, it's a little flat. Some of that may be true to the photo, as it's a plain white owl so there's not a lot of detail, but look at your reference photo around the beak. Really focus on those shadows, notice how jagged those feathers are, the lines are quite harsh where the feathers give way to the shape of the face and shadows beneath them, yet the feathers remain light. I think some darker shading around there would do wonders to giving shape to your owl's face. And equally important as shadows are highlights. Notice those highlights on the left side of the face in the reference photo, especially that long one next to the beak, those would also shape and add depth to your drawing. I can see where you recognised them and made an attempt to show them, but really try to bring those out especially on a white subject like this where lights are important. Like your lights on the body are great, I assume it's the white chalk, bring some of that intensity to the highlights on the head. If you want to push yourself try to draw every feather exactly as it is (I try this with hairs on portrait drawings, it never turns out that way and always drives me a little crazy but it helps me to focus on small details). I might also recommend either blending around the edges or a smoother sharper edge, or maybe no background at all, as the black (mostly on the right side) pops too much or something....I can't quite put my finger on it but it shifts my attention and doesn't give me a sense of backdrop or depth so much as just filled space. But those are just my suggestions, you can take them or leave them. Hopefully I'm making sense and not just coming off as an ass. I can tell by the eyes (and your gallery) you know what you're doing, they are very detailed and very realistic. And I love owls, I love that you've chosen such a great subject to draw. You really do have nice work and great taste :)

I love critiques! You didn't come off as an ass at all, I read through it all off course and I can see where you are getting at. I made a slight improvement with this Owl: [link] But I have to admit sometimes my attention wonders and I rush certain parts what become a little difficult. What I need to do is wash or cover the blank paper with a light tone of graphite and I should avoid using chalk but use a very fine rubber to get between all those shades to rub away to make white highlights. I have yet to by one, with that I would be able to really pick out the tones. And I should work more hours into the drawings even though I spend 30 on each one already. XD

I am going to update this drawing with a better photograph i think with my DSLR camera as it takes the pictures better than my scanner and the values and everything are correct. Because it looks better in person by far.

Thank you for your time!
